Roads in the park were closed to vehicles last May to provide more room for pedestrians and allow for physical distancing during the pandemic, while more parking lots were opened to accommodate people with mobility challenges. After council received feedback from accessibility groups and residents that was mostly critical of the closures, they reopened the park’s summit access road in November. The only roads that remain closed are Arbutus Way, which provides an entrance to the park from Southgate Road, and Chestnut Row and Bridgeway, both of which connect to Arbutus Way. Roads open to motor vehicles include Circle Drive, cutting through the park from Douglas Street to Dallas Road, Heywood Way, Nursery Road and the road to the summit.
VICTORIA Victoria police have nabbed a man who allegedly performed several indecent acts on Victoria Day. Police say they first received reports of the man around 6 p.m. Monday. At the time, several residents of an apartment building in the 1000-block of Pendergast Street reported seeing a nude man exposing himself and committing an indecent act outside of the building. The man then left the area before VicPD officers arrived. Fortunately, police say that several witnesses filmed the man on their cellphones, which allowed police to identify the man based on distinctive tattoos. As police were searching for the man, around 10 p.m., officers received another report of a naked man performing an indecent act around Beacon Hill Park, near the intersection of Dallas Road and Olympia Avenue.
Currently, the average citizen has more rights than a licensed security guard. B.C.’s public safety minister is far behind on our security guards compared with other provinces such as Ontario. With the appropriate training, security guards should be equipped with self-defence tools such as batons and pepper spray. Security guards should also be mandated to work in pairs for their safety. Shoplifters and other criminals are becoming more brazen by the day using weapons against security guards. On Tuesday, a security guard was stabbed when trying to stop a shoplifter. I used to be able to walk in Victoria unafraid for my safety, but the amount of violent crimes has become rampant making me second-guess before heading out.
That’s down from three weeks ago, when there were more than 100, she said. In the same period, the number of people living in Stadacona Park has dropped to four from 25, Helps said. Campers who move indoors often leave behind tents and other items, so Victoria’s parks department uses a large magnet that is pulled behind a truck to collect debris, Helps said. In Beacon Hill Park, staff are taking out remaining structures, removing debris and looking for smaller items. Needles are picked up on a regular basis, she said. Some of the soil has been compacted by campers and some areas may take a couple of years to return to their usual state, she said.
