DIVERSE Abilities have announced this year’s Dorset Neon Run is still to go ahead after postponing the event until May. The 5k night-time fun run operated by Poole based disabilities charity, which was due to be held on Saturday 24 April, have been moved to Saturday May 22, to conform with the updated Covid-19 restrictions. The event will still be held at Poole Park and a series of updates have been made to the format in line with the Covid-19 legislation. Emma Bovey, fundraising manager at Diverse Abilities, said: “We are pleased to have been able to work alongside the local authority to find a new date not too far from what we had initially planned for one of our key, and favourite, events of the year.
KEYHOLE Bridge has reopened to traffic after months of controversy surrounding its closure. BCP Council’s scrutiny board voted against extending the Keyhole Bridge traffic order last Monday, paving the way for the reopening of Whitecliff Road. But why was the road closed and what has happened since July last year?
Background BCP Council were indicatively awarded around £1.4million last year from the government’s active travel fund to support people cycling and walking. In July, we reported that a “trial modal filter” was set to be installed at Keyhole Bridge in Whitecliff Road. But the scheme attracted opposition from opposition councillors and people living nearby who criticised a “lack of consultation”.
We have a few hundred maybe even a thousand or so, at best, leisure cyclists. Unlike major cities we do not have the numbers who travel to and from work using said machine. Yet there are plans to set up large numbers of dedicated cycle lanes across the whole area at a huge cost. We council tax payers may not be footing the whole cost but I bet we will be having to pay something. We have here in Poole some of the worst pavements I have come across in the country yet is money spent on them no. BCP has spent Lottery money ‘modernising’ Poole Park resulting in an unexpected Aqua Park especially around the War Memorial, goodness knows what mess they can come up with when creating the new cycle lanes.
POOLE Park railway could be back open by autumn this year, according to council chiefs. The popular attraction has been out of action for almost three years following derailments, service interruptions and a mass walkout by railway staff. Last year, BCP Council was forced to review the funding for the project having taken the operation in-house. In September 2020, the local authority said work had been shelved due to the pandemic but an update would be given to residents later in the year. Daily Echo that after additional funding was agreed by cabinet members and a grant secured from The Parks Foundation, a new tender for a track and engine shed will be launched.
