OTTAWA Mary Simon, an Inuk leader and former diplomat, described her appointment as Canada s next governor general the first Indigenous person to serve in the role as a “step forward on the long path to reconciliation.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced Simon as the next person to serve in the viceregal role during a news conference Tuesday at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., in which the theme of healing long-standing divides figured prominently.

Investigators from the Organized Crime â Narcotics West Section of the Montreal police (SPVM) seized large quantities of synthetic drugs and opiates worth a total of $2.5 million earlier this month in the West Island.
Stemming from that action, Longueil police (SPAL) raided five locations in Montreal and South Shore in connection with an alleged methamphetamine and cocaine drug ring operating in Montreal and South Shore last week.
Metonitazene is a synthetic opiate that was first detected in Canada in 2020.
The seizure of metonitazene by SPVM officers is a first in Quebec.
The searches carried out in the district of LâÃle-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève made it possible to seize 165,000 tablets of Xanax, 29,000 tablets of methamphetamine, 1 kg of metonitazene as well as various quantities of cocaine, Ativan, Diazepam, amphetamines, isotonitazene, MDMA and crystal methamphetamine.
