Singapore Open cancelled due to surge in Covid-19 cases

Singapore, May 12 (ANI): Tournament organisers Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) and Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Wednesday agreed to cancel the Singapore Open 2021 scheduled for June 1-6, 2021. All attempts were made by the organisers and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants. However, rising COVID-19 cases globally led to complex challenges in managing inbound travel. Thus, in the interests of all players, tournament personnel and the local community s health and safety, the event has been cancelled, the Badminton World Federation said in an official statement.
BWF also confirmed that the tournament will not be rescheduled.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Open badminton championships has been postponed indefinitely and it will no longer be an Olympic Games qualifying event.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said the second-tier World Tour event can no longer be held on its scheduled May 25-30 dates due to the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the country. All attempts were made by the organisers (Badminton Association of Malaysia) and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants, but the recent surge in cases left no choice but to postpone the tournament, said BWF in a statement on Friday (May 7). BWF can confirm the rescheduled tournament will no longer take place in the Olympic qualifying window. New tournament dates will be confirmed at a later date.

The Malaysia Open 2021 is a Super 750 event on the BWF World Tour and was originally scheduled as an Olympic qualifying tournament. NEW DELHI: The Malaysia Open Super 750 tournament, one of badminton s last two Olympic qualifying events, was on Friday postponed due to a recent COVID-19 surge in the host country, dealing a severe blow to the qualification hopes of India s Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth.
The USD 600,000 event was scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur from May 25 to 30. All attempts were made by the organisers and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants, but the recent surge in cases left no choice but to postpone the tournament, Badminton World Federation said in a statement.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced the postponement of the Malaysian Open, which had been due to serve as a qualification event for Tokyo 2020.
The competition was due to take place from May 25 to 30.
The BWF said efforts were made by the governing body and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to ensure a safe environment for participants.
A surge in COVID-19 cases led to the BWF and BAM jointly agreeing to postpone the event, however.
The competition was a Super 750 event on the BWF World Tour.
The event formed part of the qualification process for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
