Protesters denounce police shootings in Rockford area in event outside City Hall Ken DeCoster, Rockford Register Star ROCKFORD About 50 people gathered outside of City Hall Saturday afternoon to protest the most recent police-involved shootings in the area. May 30th Alliance spokesman Leslie Rolfe distributed booklets documenting the history of the Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force. The assembled crowd then took to the streets, marching west along East State Street. Some carried signs while others chanted  “No justice, no peace” and “Black lives matter.” The demonstrators crossed the Rock River and marched to the Winnebago County Administration Building on Elm Street, where they scrawled messages of protest on the sidewalk including “They can’t kill us all” and “We want justice.”

Winnebago County Sheriff s Deputy opened fire on man, then hit in head

ROCKFORD Winnebago County Sheriff s Department Sgt. Joseph Broullard on Saturday opened fire on a man suspected of domestic battery who charged at him with a metal pipe, authorities said Thursday. Despite suffering what were ultimately fatal wounds, the man, Faustin Guetigo, 27, continued up a flight of basement stairs and swung the pipe at Broullard, hitting the sergeant on the head. Both Broullard and Guetigo fell to the floor. Another officer, identified as Deputy Gabriel Eiten, opened fire from outside the Bellwort Drive residence, shattering a screen door. That s according to preliminary information about the shooting released by Winnebago County State s Attorney J. Hanley, who said that a Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force investigation is continuing. 

Rockford man shot by police bonds out of Winnebago County Jail

ROCKFORD  Angel Nunez was walking in front of his Illinois Avenue home Sunday evening when a vehicle suddenly pulled up and someone wearing a hoodie jumped out and ran past him. Nunez said he didn’t recognize the person, but he thought he heard him say “grandpa” as he rushed by. Seconds later, a police officer ran past the 74-year-old Rockford man. The man in the hooded sweatshirt scaled a wooden fence that separated Nunez s backyard from that of a neighboring fourplex. Nunez said when the officer reached the fence, he peered over it and fired his weapon. The brief foot chase was over. Nunez said he looked over the fence.

GoFundMe started for family of Rockford man shot, killed by police

ROCKFORD A GoFundMe account has been established for the family of the Rockford man who was shot and killed by a Winnebago County sheriff s deputy Saturday night. The man, Faustin Guetigo, was an immigrant from Central African Republic. He had been living on Bellwort Drive just outside of the city s limits in southeast Winnebago County since March. Winnebago County sheriff s deputies responded to the home Saturday after Guetigo s wife, Rose Ndoroum, called for help. The couple was having a domestic dispute. Law enforcement officials told members of the media Monday that Guetigo was outside the home but fled inside when a deputy arrived. After more deputies arrived and entered the house, officials said Guetigo charged the deputies with a metal pipe and struck one of the deputies on the head.
