Skateboarders welcome at this grand Paris museum
Lashings of whimsy from a top design duo are aimed at attracting young visitors to the Pinault collection, housed in the cityâs imposing Bourse de Commerce.

Three slithery, 20-metre-high banners shimmer silver and gold outside the stoic 19th-century Bourse de Commerce building, a gentle meander to the Louvre one way, the Pompidou Centre the other. Designed by brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the banners bear no signal or logo to suggest that the Bourse is now the Paris home of the private art collection of billionaire François Pinault, founder of the Kering Group and Franceâs third-richest man.

It s been a 20-year-long project, but the billionaire s enduring ambition has finally come to fruition
The Bourse de Commerce opened this week in Paris
The opening of the art museum of luxury goods billionaire Francois Pinault was always going to be a major Parisian event. The fact that Bourse de Commerce’s launch, on 22 May, ended up coinciding with the easing of a six-month lockdown only added to the hype.
Tickets are completely sold out until the first week of July. On a visit earlier this week, the five-floor building was abuzz, inasmuch as distancing restrictions allow, with curious visitors of all ages, and in outfits occupying all points on the casual to formal spectrum.

PARIS–More than 20 years ago, when billionaire business mogul François Pinault was in the planning stages of creating a venue in Paris to display his vast personal collection of contemporary art, some responses to his vision were, to put it generously, lukewarm.
Pinault had his eyes on an island in the middle of the Seine in the well-to-do suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt, but the mayor,
Libération reported, “didn’t roll out the red carpet.”
Apparently, it was only when then-President Jacques Chirac intervened on Pinault’s behalf during an Elysée garden party, and the reluctant mayor green-lighted the museum.
