City OKs outdoor dining for Old Corner | News, Sports, Jobs

LAURA JAMESON ljameson@lockhaven.com LOCK HAVEN Lock Haven City Council approved a request to close the Grove Street entrance of the East Church Street parking lot for outdoor dining this summer. Don Powers, owner of The Old Corner, made the request during Monday night’s city council meeting. The Old Corner is located at the corner of Grove and Church streets and due to its small size and limited indoor capacity caused by COVID-19 restrictions, cannot serve many customers indoors, Powers said. “I can really only get one table inside for health and safety reasons,” Powers said. Once restrictions ease up he said he may be able to fit up to seven people in the space, however that won’t be enough to sustain the business.

Based on the COVID-19-driven outdoors initiative of last year, when the city with PennDOT approval closed Main Street from Jay to Vesper for much of the summer to accommodate outdoor concerts and restaurant seating, the general consensus is, let’s do it again.

City Council opposes LHU integration | News, Sports, Jobs

From staff reports LOCK HAVEN Lock Haven City Council would like the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) to put the brakes on integrating Lock Haven University with Bloomsburg and Mansfield. Council this week unanimously approved a resolution opposing the proposed merger of the three institutions. Councilman Bill Mincer offered the measure, saying PASSHE needs to do a more in-depth study of any merger’s impact on the students, community and economy. His resolution came one day before PASSHE Chancellor Daniel Greenstein met virtually with LHU faculty and staff, and a few days before Greenstein’s scheduled testimony before the General Assembly.
