New six-mile nature route for walkers planned for South Swindon

Parish council chairman Chris Watts and councillorLinda Kasmaty Walkers will soon be able to enjoy a six-mile new nature route through the town.  South Swindon Green Corridor is being developed by the parish council, starting at Shaftesbury Lake in Park South and finishing at Cambria Bridge play area. The parish council will be installing way markings, finger posts and boards with information about the surrounding natural environment.  Parish council chairman Chris Watts said: “This is a really exciting project. Walking has become a bit of a national pastime while the lockdown has been in place and even though the origins of this project came before Covid, it has been great to deliver it while people are so enthusiastic about walking.”

Swindon council made £3 17m from car parking last year

Swindon Borough Council made £3.17m from parking fees in 2019/20 Swindon Borough Council raked in millions of pounds from car parking last year. That is according to analysis by the RAC Foundation, which shows councils across the country are making hundreds of millions from parking activities. Swindon s local authority made a profit of £3.17m from parking fees in the financial year 2019-20, which ended on March 31. That’s comparable to previous years, but the council already knows it has made much less over the last 11 months because of lockdown. In fact, last year s surplus was slightly up from the £3.1m it received in 2019-19 – but more than half a million less than what it made in 2015-16.

No Covid fines as police remind sledgers about social distancing on snow day

In a tweet, Wiltshire Police thanked people for being responsible and following lockdown rules. But officers were on hand to “disperse” 200 people who gathered at a wintry Coate Water Country Park. A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We would like to thank the vast majority of people for the responsible way they enjoyed the snow yesterday. “Officers carried out routine patrols of key locations, including Coate Water in Swindon, to engage with the public and remind people about social distancing. “We did not issue any dispersal orders, but people listened to officers and used personal responsibility to acknowledge when areas became busy and returned home. We also did not issue any FPNs or warning yesterday for snow-related breaches of the lockdown restrictions.”
