Acadia National Park Closes Part of Park Loop Road Ahead of Winter Storm Acadia National Park officials announced Monday morning, February 1st that the Ocean Drive section of the Park Loop Road, from Schooner Head Road to Otter Cliffs Road, will be closed from late Monday afternoon through Tuesday due to the impending winter storm. There currently is a winter storm warning in effect from 11 p.m. tonight February 1st through 11 p.m. Tuesday, February 2nd The current weather forecast calls for 4 to 6 inches of snow Monday night and then snow, freezing rain and sleet on Tuesday morning, February 2nd, with freezing rain and sleet on Tuesday afternoon. Storm total snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches of snow with ice accumulation of up to 1/10th of an inch.

“An Acadian Winter” with Bob Thayer   PHOTO COURTESY OF BOB THAYER SOUTHWEST HARBOR   Photographer and naturalist Bob Thayer will give an online presentation titled “An Acadian Winter,” hosted by Southwest Harbor Public Library, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 5:30 p.m.     Thayer’s photographs will highlight why we choose to ‘endure’ the short and cold days of a Maine winter, and why many of us love winter in Maine. After all, the spring is sweeter after you’ve survived the winter.       A native of Maine, but for 30 years a teacher in Massachusetts schools, Thayer has spent his summers as a naturalist at Acadia National Park. He has photographed and authored three books on the park, “The Park Loop Road,” “Beyond the Park Loop Road” and “Acadia’s Carriage Roads.”

The National Parks Service has announced free entrance days for 2021. On six select days this year, anyone can visit national parks for free. According to the NPS, fee-free days provide a great opportunity to visit a new place or an old favorite, especially one of the national parks that normally charge an entrance fee. 2021 Fee-Free Days: Fee-free days do not cover amenities or use fees for activities like camping, boat launch use, transportation, or special tours.

January 1st, 2021 | by: Stu Marckoon Trenton Withdrawal (Trenton) – A group studying school funding in Trenton has urged the town to withdraw from AOS 91 which includes the four towns on Mt. Desert Island.  The Ellsworth American reports the town’s School Evaluation Options Committee made its recommendation to the Board of Selectmen this week, and also urged the Trenton School Committee to take a no confidence vote against the superintendent of schools.    The group is not an official town government committee, and says it is looking for ways to try to save money on education costs.   MDI – COVID (Bar Harbor) – Mt. Desert Island High School says some teachers and students are isolating after they were in close contact with someone who tested positive for Coronavirus.  WVII-TV reports high school families got an e-mail from Principal Matt Haney saying he expects school to reopen as normal on Monday.  He did not identify the infected person

By Dick BroomMount Desert Islander Read Article ACADIA NATIONAL PARK The fare-free Island Explorer bus system, which did not run at all in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is expected to operate on a limited basis this coming season. “We intend to run Island Explorer for a full season (June 23 to Oct. 11), but it will be greatly simplified; it will look very different from our traditional service,” said Paul Murphy, executive director of Downeast Transportation, which operates the Island Explorer.
