President Joe Biden s stimulus package aims to provide a major boost and big bucks to Oregon school districts as they struggle to reopen safely.
While some may be focused on the $1,400 direct stimulus payments that will land in most individuals wallets as part of the proposed American Rescue Plan, the gigantic $1.6 trillion package also would offer hundreds of millions of dollars to local schools.
Budget resolutions have passed both the House and Senate, but in mismatched form, and therefore the plan must undergo a budget reconciliation process before the 600-page bill lands on Biden s desk.
Education in Oregon is in a moment of urgent challenges and rapid transformation, as the pressures of the coronavirus pandemic and uprisings for racial justice have compounded longstanding issues related to economic and racial disparities.

Winter weather has prompted school districts in the Portland area, Willamette Valley and Columbia River Gorge to close buildings and cancel in-person activities Friday.
Many districts have closed completely. Some are carrying on with remote learning. Check our live closure updates for the latest information about whether your school is in session Friday.
The Oregon Zoo has closed through at least Saturday.
Some prominent updates are detailed below.
Government offices:
The State of Oregon has closed all State offices in Portland and Salem areas Friday. Employees who can work remotely will be available electronically. This announcement does not cover courts or legislative offices. Visit www.oregon.gov/das for more information.

Despite most Portland-area students attending school from home, several school districts have announced closures that impact limited in-person learning and other services. What follows is a list of closure announcements that OPB is aware of.
Gresham-Barlow School District All after-school activities are canceled Thursday evening through the weekend.
Portland Public Schools All PPS buildings closed Thursday. All school-based activities are canceled including Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI), child care and athletics.
Reynolds School District Online distance learning continues. Thursday and Friday, all school-based activities including meal distribution, supplies pickups, athletics, etc. are canceled.
Riverdale School District Distance learning continues. All school-based activities are canceled including Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI) and athletics.
