At Swearing In, Bloomington Mayor Mwilambwe Vows to Tackle Divisions

Emily Bollinger / WGLT History was made Saturday morning as Mboka Mwilambwe was sworn in as the next mayor of Bloomington.  As he recited the oath of office on the lawn of the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, Mwilambwe became the city’s first Black mayor. In his first official remarks as mayor, Mwilambwe described an agenda predicated on inclusion and cooperation. “A house divided cannot stand,” Mwilambwe said, quoting Lincoln. “I have seen the toll that divisiveness has taken on us.” During his campaign, Mwilambwe cited a growing polarization as one of the most pressing issues faced by the community.

For Tuesday’s election, the Bloomington Election Commission and the McLean County Clerk’s office project turnout could run a little higher, possibly between 25-30%. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Bloomington Election Commission What are the reasons? BEC Executive Director Tim Mitchell said he thinks there is some carryover from the divisive November election. “In Georgia this past week, they passed a new law to impact voters down there, which has made national headlines,” said Mitchell. “The whole concept of voting is still in the forefront of people’s minds.”
