Performing arts students continue to overcome pandemic hurdles in a big, complicated way. The Bloomington High School Chamber Orchestra has performed a chorus from “Judas Maccabeaus” by George Friedrich Handel remotely, under direction from orchestra teacher Caleb Mackinder. Mackinder carefully selected the piece, saying he had to find a piece that could harmonize with the fear of trying something new. “Because we’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve never taught like this and they’ve never played like this, so I wanted it to be something simple,” said Mackinder. The video on Facebook features a collage of high school students playing stringed instruments like the violin and cello.

Bloom High School Celebrates Black History Month

Reply Basic RGB It is Black History Month and the African-American Culture Club (A2C2) at Bloom High School is taking charge as a shining inspiration for the month. The A2C2, sponsored by Kimberly Bateast and Zorriante Brown and led by club president, Nyanna Harris, has been leading many activities and events to celebrate black education, black culture, and black history. These events have all been centered around accomplishments the black community has made thus far. So far, all of the events have been a major success. On the 3rd, the club watched Fruitvale Station, the story of Oscar Grant, as portrayed by Michael B. Jordan. On the 10th, they held a Trivia Bingo Night and a Culver s Fundraiser, which was hosted by the very first Culver s run by a black woman in Matteson, Illinois. Finally, on the 11th, the club held a Family Reading Night where the members of the club read books to families who attended.

Bloomington Council Extends Gleason s Contract; Adds Youth To Community Board

Bloomington City Council meets remotely Feb. 8, 2021. The Bloomington City Council on Monday agreed to keep City Manager Tim Gleason on contract until March 2025, nine months longer than his current contract, and the earliest time he’s eligible for retirement. Also at Monday’s remote meeting, the council voted to start its $4.3 million, Phase 2 water main project on Locust Street; and to add two youth members to the city’s police advisory board. Gleason’s contract, in which his annual base salary is just over $197,000, had been set to expire July 1, 2024. The decision, presented as part of the council’s consent agenda, passed unanimously, with no discussion.
