Autism Fast Facts
Here is a look at autism.
ASD can be found among all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic groups.
Diagnosis
There is no definitive medical test to diagnose autism. Instead, the disorder is diagnosed by observing a child’s development.
According to the CDC, signs of autism may include deficits in social communication and interaction in a variety of contexts, difficulty engaging in back-and-forth conversation and an absence of interest in forming friendships with peers.
Vaccines and Autism
The debate over whether autism spectrum disorders are caused by vaccines started in 1998 when the medical journal The Lancet published a now-retracted study by researcher Andrew Wakefield linking the MMR vaccine to autism.

Munchausen syndrome by proxy, also known as âfactitious disorder imposed on another,â is defined by the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as âthe intentional production or feigning of physical or psychological signs or symptoms in another person who is under the individualâs care.â Itâs a disorder that first emerged, with both clinical and legal ramifications, in the 1970s.
One of the first people to be successfully prosecuted for murders ascribed to the disorder was Martha Woods, an Army wife who was convicted for killing her adopted son Paul Woods in 1972. Though only convicted of the one murder, it is believed that she had nine victims (only two of whom survived) across the United States, including Marlan Rash, an 18-month-old boy who died in Colorado Springs in 1964 while in Marthaâs care.
One in five women experience pain during intercourse. The latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the bible of American psychiatrists, lists it under "genito-pelvic pain or penetration disorder."

Brandon Jones remembers when he first learned about the death of George Floyd. My first reaction was numb, actually.
Jones wasn t sure how to feel, he said. He was horrified. He was angry. But it didn t feel like something new. It reminded me of other killings of other unarmed Black people, specifically Black men,â Jones said.
Jones is Black and 6-foot, 7-inches tall. âI m aware that my physical presence sometimes evokes fear in people, he said. When he watched the video of Floydâs death, the Sturbridge resident realized someone could feel threatened by him, and call the police. And knowing that it wouldn t take much for me to end up with a similar fate,â he said.
