EDMONTON - Canada began shedding game rust with a 16-2 win over beleaguered Germany at the world junior men s hockey championship Saturday.
Dylan Cozens of Whitehorse had a hat trick and three assists for the host country against an opponent ravaged by the COVID-19 virus.
Dawson Mercer, Philip Tomasino, Alex Newhook and Peyton Krebs each scored twice for Canada.

Even with a full team, Germany has never beaten Canada at the World Juniors. With the Germans forced to play with only 14 skaters against Canada on Saturday due to a COVID-19 outbreak on the team, they were facing a near impossible task.
Canada had 10 different players score in a big-time blowout of Germany in their first round robin game, 16-2. It was two goals away from matching Canada’s largest margin of victory ever at the World Juniors.

Dylan Cozens had three goals and three assists as Canada started its quest for a second straight gold medal with a 16-2 win over Germany on Saturday at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton.
Dawson Mercer had two goals and two assists and Peyton Krebs had a hat trick. Alex Newhook, and Philip Tomasino also scored twice.
Action started right away when Cozens hit the crossbar for Canada, and Germany came back the other way and crashed into the net.
Montreal Canadiens prospect Kaiden Guhle opened the scoring when he skated into the zone and fired the puck past Arno Tiefensee.
