(NEW YORK) Tensions are rising between turtle rescue organizations and the Florida Wildlife Commission that oversees their work so much so that the unpaid volunteers may soon be banned from helping to save the reptiles.
Every year between March and October, multiple species of sea turtles, mainly loggerheads, swim up to Florida s shores to lay their eggs. But once the hatchlings emerge, they face a multitude of obstacles, many of them human-made, and the majority of them in Broward County never make it to the ocean, local activists say.
To help, turtle rescue groups stake out the nests, deter residents and tourists from interfering and collect the just-hatched turtles into buckets to move them into the splash zone, near the water, Richard WhiteCloud, founder and director of Sea Turtle Oversight Protection (STOP), told ABC News.

DeSantis and lawmakers near deal on Florida gambling: Hello sports betting
Gov. Ron DeSantis is close to nailing down a long-sought gaming deal with the Seminole Tribe of Florida that would expand gaming in tribal facilities and usher online sports betting into the state for the first time. The gaming compact if ratified by the state Legislature next week and later approved by federal regulators would make Florida the largest state in the nation to legalize sports betting, and the Tribe would be the exclusive operator of the digital sports books in Florida for the next 30 years. Daytona Beach, FL – Another free community event is scheduled by Volusia County Animal Services (VCAS) for Saturday, May 22. The drive-thru event will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at VCAS headquarters, 1250 Indian Lake Road, Daytona Beach. This is the first event to include free pet rabies vaccinations and the fifth since last June. In the past, the event has seen mainly dogs and cats and also some more unusual animals. On May 22, Animal Services is encouraging residents to also get their reptiles microchipped. It’s part of a new Florida Wildlife Commission initiative called Tag Your Reptile Day. The program aims to microchip non-invasive species such as tegu lizards and green iguanas for proper identification of pet and owner. About the size of a grain of rice, microchips are implanted just under the skin. With the wave of a hand-held wand over the pet’s back, the ID code on the microchip will lead to the owner’s name and contact info
