Advanced Analytics: Early 2021 Season Projections for FSU

The spring season is in the rear view mirror for the Florida State Seminoles as they gear up for a summer offseason program. During the summer, teams can see incoming transfers and highschool recruits join the fray, or lose pieces to the portal or, god forbid, injuries. At this point in the offseason projections are still being tuned in order to best predict the 2021 season. Recently Draftkings Sportsbook released win totals for all 130 FBS teams. With those totals we can compare them against other projection models to give a rough first estimate of the 2021 season. The two projection models we will be comparing today are ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) model, and my own personal ELO rating system. To give a quick summary of my model, an ELO rating system basically assigns teams a skill rating based on previous game outcomes and margin of victory (as well as a home field adjustment). FSU: RHP Parker Messick (6-2, 3.30 ERA) vs. UM: TBA On Monday, Florida State became the first school in league history to win Player, Pitcher and Freshman of the Year in the same season. Catcher Mat Nelson, the nation’s leader in home runs with 22, was named Player of the Year, joining Buster Posey as the only Seminole catchers to earn the honor. Parker Messick, who will throw Friday against Miami in the ACC Championship, was named Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, joining Carlos Rodon (2012, NC State) as the only players to earn both in the same season. Nelson and Messick earned first team All-ACC honors, while Bryce Hubbart and outfielder Robby Martin were named to the third team. Messick and Hubbart were also on the ACC’s All-Freshman Team.

May 24, 2021 ⚾: Four Noles Earn All-ACC Honors CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mat Nelson, Parker Messick, Bryce Hubbart and Robby Martin earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, the league announced Monday. Earlier Monday, Nelson was named the ACC Player of the Year while Messick was named the Pitcher and Freshman of the Year. Nelson, FSU’s sophomore catcher, and Messick, FSU’s ace, were named to the first team. Hubbart and Martin both earned third team honors, while Messick and Hubbart highlighted the All-Freshman Team. Nelson leads the country with 22 home runs entering the ACC Tournament. He led FSU with 63 runs batted in and started 48 of 50 games for the Seminoles, throwing out 16 would-be basestealers on the season. Nelson is the first FSU player since Buster Posey in 2008 with over 20 home runs in a season.
