All rights reserved) TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The State Board of Education is set to vote next week on a proposal that would place strict guidelines on the way U.S. history is taught in public schools, but opponents argue the measure threatens to obscure the realities of historical events as part of a “culture war.” The proposed rule would mandate that teachers “may not define American history as something other than the creation of a new nation based largely on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.”

Education Officials To Launch Listening Tour On Proposed Civics Curriculum

Online comments are being accepted before the State Board of Education considers the proposal on June 10. The Florida Department of Education is planning a “listening tour” over the next two weeks for people to provide input on a proposed rule seeking to revise education standards in civics and English-language arts, and to introduce new standards for several areas of instruction. The department is proposing revised standards for civics and government instruction in kindergarten through 12th grade, which will include analyzing the “influence of religion (Hebraic and Christian) on America’s founding ideas about law and government” for high school students.
