Firefighters put out fire at VFW in Everson Thursday evening

The Everson VFW at 401 Shipley St. caught fire Thursday when a light fixture at the rear of the building malfunctioned. Jeff King, fire chief of Everson Volunteer Fire Company, said the fire spread from the light to the wall, and then to the roof of the building. King said 15 to 20 patrons were inside at the time and got out safely; however, since they were on the other side of the building, they did not initially notice the fire. “Without the neighbor visibly seeing it, nobody else would have seen it,” King said. King said a neighbor called the fire in at 9:40 p.m. and rushed over to the building to alert those inside.

Portion of Route 119 in Bullskin Township to be closed

The left lane of northbound and southbound Route 119 at Bellview Drive in Bullskin Township will be closed Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The closure will be in place to allow PennDOT crews to replace two precast concrete inlet box drains. Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the job site, and relevant training.

Haggerty announces re-election bid for Connellsville-area magisterial district judge

Magisterial District Judge Ronald Haggerty Jr., has announced has his candidacy for re-election. His office serves Bullskin Township, the City of Connellsville, Connellsville Township, Saltlick Township, South Connellsville and Springfield Township. Haggerty has been serving as district judge since 2010, and has presided in over 53,000 cases, including over 5,500 criminal cases. He is currently the legislative chairman for the Special Court Judges Association of PA. He is the current president of the District 7 Special Court Judges Association, which encompasses Fayette, Greene, Westmoreland and Washington Counties. Haggerty also served as president and vice president of the Fayette County Special Court Judges. Haggerty is a 1988 graduate of Connellsville Area High School and holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Westmoreland County Community College.
