As Pullman High School seniors gear up to graduate in a couple of months, PHS alumni and community members are donating money to buy gift cards for seniors.
Event organizer Nadia Daud and her sister created the fundraiser last year with several friends at the height of COVID-19. Daud said the group raised over $9,000.
The main purpose of the fundraiser is to celebrate PHS seniors, she said.
“There’s no intention to keep any money,” Daud said. “All of it is going to them. We’re not doing this for us anyway.”
Last year, each senior received four gift cards to local Pullman restaurants, totaling $40. Daud said restaurants included the Daily Grind, Red Bento, Ferdinand’s Ice Cream Shoppe, McDonald’s and Rancho Viejo. The Senior Party Committee also handed out gift bags.

Katie Wheatley, Pullman High School junior, is the 2022 Distinguished Young Woman of Pullman.
To win the title, Katie was judged in a competition based on five different categories. Categories included scholastic, a fitness routine, an interview, talent and self-expression.
Katie said she chose to play the piano for her talent. Her two- to three-minute fitness routine combined fitness with various dance elements.
Katie’s older sister, Evelyn Wheatley, competed for DYW in 2019 and was the runner-up.
“I actually only participated in the program because my older sister had done it two years ago,” Katie said. “I am so glad I did. It was a really unique opportunity to meet some new people.”
