The Denver Broncos have had trouble drafting a franchise quarterback over the years. Some of Denver s quarterback choices have been serviceable, and some were downright train wrecks.
The latest pick, Drew Lock, is still hanging in there, but by a thread, even though his bumpy road thus far has been assisted by factors beyond his control, like the pandemic and how that impacted what was his second year in the NFL.
Having said that, why have the Broncos fallen short of drafting a bonafide franchise QB over the years? Part of the problem is the way the modern NFL chews up and spits out quarterbacks at a much faster clip. QBs don t get the same amount of time to be groomed and show their worth as they were in the past. The new-age quarterback is thrown into the deep end from day one, and if he s not blowing the doors down by midseason, fans and media grow impatient.

With the arrival of a new league year on March 17, free agent deals can become official and already three quarterbacks including the first and second picks in the 2016 draft have been traded. More movement, possibly much more, will follow. Frustrated stars, well-priced veterans, young starters all could be on the move, as this emerging era of quarterback empowerment collides with a salary-cap crunch that compels teams to assess their resources at the sport s most critical position.

As the NFL patiently awaits an anticipated Carson Wentz trade, the Philadelphia Eagles are soon expected to part ways with another franchise icon. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz is “bracing for a change of scenery via trade or release,” perhaps even as part of a package deal involving Wentz. The 30-year-old Ertz gave a tearful address to Philly media at the end of the 2020 season, admitting then that he wasn’t sure of his future with the team. It now appears he was, in fact, issuing an early farewell. Ertz has long been a speculated 2021 salary cap casualty, entering the final year of a five-year, $42.5 million extension signed in 2016.
