France supports WFP’s agricultural resilience–building projects in the South of Iraq [EN/AR/KU] Format BAGHDAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed a 250,000 Euro contribution from France towards agricultural resilience-building activities in Basra governorate – in the south of Iraq, that will support 7,500 people and their families. This is the first time France supports WFP’s work in southern Iraq, enhancing the long-term self-reliance of tens of thousands of people indirectly in food-insecure, vulnerable communities. Such initiatives are even more vital during the pandemic. The project is also funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented in collaboration with the municipality in Basra, local communities and NGO partner Action Against Hunger.

France Provides Additional USD 617,000 for UNMAS Activities in Iraq [EN/AR] Format Baghdad, 04 March 2021 – The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Iraq welcomes an additional contribution of EUR 505,000 (approximately USD 617,000) from the Government of France renewing its commitment in supporting the Government of Iraq to protect the populations threatened by the deadly explosive ordnance left behind by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). For the third consecutive year, the Government of France, through its generous contribution to UNMAS in Iraq, will support stabilization and humanitarian efforts through the clearance of improvised explosive devices and explosive remnants of war that threaten the lives of communities in Ninewa province, and impede the safe return of internally displaced persons.

France supports UN-Habitat’s Efforts to Assist Recent Returnees to Salah al-Din [EN/AR] Format The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) welcomes a new partnership and contribution of EUR 100,000 from the Government of France to provide support to internally displaced persons who have recently returned to the rural town of Yathrib, Balad District, Salah al-Din and are currently living in critical situations. Damage to houses remains as one of the main obstacles that prevent many internally displaced persons to returning to their areas of origin. The timely contribution from France will be utilized to provide support to around 600 of the most vulnerable people in Yathrib by providing shelter upgrading assistance and non-food items for 75 households and following verification of housing, land and property rights, will support a further 15 households with housing rehabilitation.
