Police had mounted surveillance A 24-year-old man accused of possessing banned gutkha products for sale and distribution at several outlets in the city has been arrested in the Mambalam police station limits. Over 1.2 tonnes of the contraband was seized from him.
Following a tip-off on the movement of the contraband, a special team of police, led by the Mambalam inspector, mounted surveillance at the junction between Burkit Road and Dhandapani Road and nabbed the accused who was carrying two handbags.
On searching him, the police recovered the contraband and the name of the accused was given as Saganapuram, 24, of Ambattur. The police recovered 1.2 tonnes of the contraband from a godown which he had taken on rent.

Drivers can book their slots through an app before reaching the spot The Greater Chennai Corporation has planned to increase the number of smart parking slots to 12,000. Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani announced this on social media on Wednesday.
The Corporation is planning to introduce premium smart parking spaces on Khadar Nawaz Khan Road with a fee of ₹40 an hour.

CHENNAI: With the recent rain spell coming to an end, motorists plying through Basin Bridge Road to Pulianthope and Veppery are heaving a sigh of relief. Reason being they are now able to evade potholes. Till two days ago, the potholes at the Pulianthope Junction on the Basin Bridge Road was filled with water.
While it has dried up now, the road is filled with just stones, potholes and gravel make riding on this stretch a backbreaking experience. Commuters said the road is in the same condition for more than a year. “It connects areas like Central, Veppery, Purasawalkam and Vyasarpadi. It’s a busy stretch,” said Raghavan G, a commuter. Just 100 metres away from Pulianthope Junction, Elephant Gate Road looks equally bad.
