Work to fix road damaged in February 2020 to begin next month

The damage to Park Road last February Main repairs to a key local route are expected to begin in May. Park Road, which links Elland and Brighouse, was severely damaged by flooding in February 2020 and following the landslip has been closed since. A 50-metre long crack and some smaller tension cracks in the road meant that it had to be fully closed for safety reasons, says Calderdale Council, who sealed the crack when it was safe to do so after the flooding, to prevent further weakening of the slope. The council continued monitoring the road and seeking funding to pay for what it says is a complicated repair.

When will Brightlingsea Lido reopen?

The popular Brightlingsea Lido was forced to stay shut last year after storm damage and coronavirus hit. The lido, in Promenade Way, flooded in the wake of Storm Ciara last February. Waters breached the sea walls in Brightlingsea, leaving offices, changing rooms and the café submerged. Within hours kind-hearted residents and volunteers had rallied round to help with the clean up and thousands of pounds were raised. But when coronavirus hit it delayed the reopening of the lido. Swimmers were allowed to return to outdoor pools this week as lockdown rules relaxed. The lido has confirmed it hopes to be able to reopen by the end of June.

A section of the damaged road Key funding for a £2.5 million road repair should be in place by the end of April. Around £1.8 million towards the cost of repairing Park Road, which links Brighouse and Elland, is expected to be funded from the Getting Building fund, administered by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, of which Calderdale Council is a member. At its last meeting, the authority’s West Yorkshire and York Investment Committee approved progressing the scheme to final business case with costs stage and gave its indicative approval to spend once it has reached that point. The road was closed after a landslip when Storm Ciara struck Calderdale in February last year.
