Heavy snow continued to fall Thursday across the Northeast as the season s first major winter storm slowly moved off the East Coast, pounding some areas with nearly 4 feet of snow.
At least four people were killed by the storm. Hundreds of vehicle crashes, some of them deadly, were reported from the mid-Atlantic states into the Northeast, the Weather Channel said.
More than 50,000 customers were without electricity Thursday afternoon, Poweroutage.us said, mainly in Virginia and New York state.
For some Mainers eagerly anticipating a white Christmas, the holiday has come early.
Winter Storm Gail on Thursday morning plowed into southern Maine, delivering heavy snow, gusty winds and hundreds of weather closures for businesses and schools.
As of mid-morning, forecasts called for at least 1 foot of snow in Cumberland and York counties, with some areas receiving as much as 18 inches. Temperatures were in the teens.
The National Weather Service had issued a winter storm warning for all of York, Cumberland, Kennebec, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties, as well as southern Oxford County.
North of Bangor, however, the storm was predicted to only leave a trace of snow, as Gail swerves out to sea. Earlier in the day and on Wednesday, the storm had pummelled much of the northeastern U.S., leaving over 40 inches of snow in some places.

Fresh snowfall today could add 6 to 12 inches in parts of New England.
Although weather conditions will improve in most areas on Thursday, the interior northeast and New England will continue to see snow, though it will gradually come to an end from west to east by tonight.
Winter Storm Gail may produce coastal flooding and the National Weather Service has issued warnings and advisories from North Carolina to Massachusetts. Flooding is also expected to affect the Jersey Shore and coastal Delaware during Thursday morning s high tide.

The first major snowfall to hit the East Coast this season dumped several inches of snow on multiple states and led to a massive pileup in central Pennsylvania that left at least two dead, according to state police.
Authorities said somewhere between 30 and 60 cars were involved in the crash on Interstate 80 in Clinton County between Longanton and Lock Haven. Multiple people were injured.
Authorities urged people to stay home and not travel unless it is absolutely necessary.
There was also a 20-vehicle pileup in New York City, according to city officials and FDNY sources.
