In a more traditional Homegrown Music Festival year, a human high on hugs and a lack of snowbanks might trip her way into Teatro Zuccone’s black box, for instance, and see something like this:

There’s something comforting about the fact that, although this year’s Duluth Homegrown Music Festival is virtual, the traditional schedule remains intact. For kickoff Sunday, that means a Children’s Music Showcase in the morning. This year’s hour-long video showcase is a well-curated mix of music and activities, with Brian Barber’s Draw-Along Fun Time teaching kids how to draw a chicken and Bootsy Collins (because, why not?). About this time every year, Kala Moria likes to create an extracurricular, Homegrown Music Festival-themed activity that runs adjacent to the annual showcase of local music, art and visuals.
One year she made Homegrown trading cards featuring musicians and other familiar faces from the scene. Players had eight rounds to build a dream musical lineup. Another year, the tuba player from the polka punk band Winzige Hosen assembled a marching band to play during the annual Homegrown kickball game.
