Mangaluru City Corporation finally gets down to reconstructing buildings
The more-than-a-decade-old move of Mangaluru City Corporation to demolish and re-construct the Central Market in the heart of the city is heading towards a reality with the civic body commencing demolition of two six-decade-old vegetable and fish market buildings on Wednesday.
Armed with an order of the Urban Development Department issued on Tuesday, which permitted demolition, the corporation went about bringing down the buildings to pave way for Mangaluru Smart City Ltd. (MSCL) to re-construct a new modern market building for the civic body under the Smart City Mission.

The meeting was informed that the Forest Department has prepared a detailed plan under Green J&K drive wherein 5 lakh plants each have been kept for plantation in smart cities of Jammu and Srinagar. The department will plant these saplings in the identified areas and will also provide saplings to various other agencies for plantation in the earmarked areas under the Mission. Besides, the Social Forestry Department will also be contributing in this plantation drive especially in institutions.
Regarding progress achieved in the month of April under CAPEX, CAMPA and other CSS schemes, It was informed that the actual planting season starts in the month of July in Jammu region and November in Kashmir region. Besides, at present all the forest divisions are all set for the plantation drive and sufficient plants have already been raised and being maintained in the government nurseries besides e-tendering for works, procurement of materials is also going on in full swing. NOT-SO-SMART BOARDS
As a part of the Smart City Mission’s luminous decor,
digital boards displaying travel time from one point to another were propped up all over the city for a futuristic feel but it seems they have developed some rather serious issues. Now, the screens only show errors and cracks, and black out several times during the day.
They were aimed at sharing automated alerts on traffic-related incidents on the displays and on social media channels. However, it seems they are getting no maintenance done from time to time.

Smart City Startup challenge for start-ups

Hyderabad: Smart City Living Labs at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, in association with Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology and The Smart City Mission have launched a Smart City Start-up challenge.
The programme is envisioned to support and scale start-ups that are building sustainable, inclusive and innovative solutions for smart cities. The month-long programme gives selected start-ups an opportunity to pitch to smart city technology MNCs, smart city officials and the winner will get an equity-free grant of Rs 10 lakh for further development.
