It’s time for Dublin to ride the wave of mobility as a service 5 Mar 2021474 Views Image: Dott A transport revolution is gaining momentum across Europe. Now is the time for Irish cities to get on board, writes Dott’s Duncan Robertson. Minister Eamon Ryan’s recent announcement that he intends to legislate for the use of e-scooters and e-bikes will pave the way for sharing schemes to be rolled out across Dublin and other Irish cities. It’s a welcome development for anyone who wants a safe, cost-effective and eco-friendly way of getting around. It’s also a valuable opportunity for city authorities to put the right technology in place now to lay the foundations for fully integrated transport systems of the future.

Smart Ring Buoys innovation challenge underway across Dublin s 4 local authorities

Four companies are piloting a range of innovative solutions to supply low-cost, retro-fit, technology solutions to alert, monitor and report on when ring buoys go missing or are tampered with. This is part of an innovation challenge that was issued in 2020 to find smarter solutions to address the challenge of ‘missing’ ring buoys. The solutions aim to monitor in real time when life buoys are tampered with or taken. Apart from the potential to save lives, other benefits include reducing the number of ring buoys that go missing and decreasing the time taken to replace them. In Dublin City Council alone, around 15 ring buoys go missing or are stolen every week. The need to replace nearly 600 ring buoys each year costs in excess of €20,000 and, more importantly, potentially endangers lives.

DRHE launches new app for public to alert teams to location of rough sleepers

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) has launched a new free App, which enables members of the public to alert street outreach teams to the location of people sleeping rough, so they can make contact with them. The DRHE and the Dublin Simon Community outreach service teams provide on street support and help secure accommodation for people sleeping rough. These teams are on the streets, 365 days a year from early morning to late each night, working proactively to engage with people sleeping rough and help them avail of emergency accommodation.  By simply logging the location on the App, anyone can provide the outreach teams with an exact location of a person who is sleeping rough. Once the teams receive the alert, they can immediately go to the area and offer advice and assistance to the person.
