Out of the past May 11, 1896 Sidney remains today without a fire chief despite the 28 ballots taken during the meeting of council last night for the specific purpose of electing a chief. None of the four nominated for the position received the required majority of all votes cast by members of council. Nominated for the position were: George Covil, Jasper Wade, Charles Eisenstein, and J.H. McClung. After the unsuccessful attempt to name a fire chief, council adjourned until next Monday night. 100 Years May 11, 1921 Through the efforts of a committee appointed by the Kiwanis club, B.O. Worrell, former leader of the Sidney band, has agreed to meet with them next Wednesday to discuss the possibility of returning and taking charge of a new band for Sidney. Mr. Worrell is at present located at Ottumwa, Iowa, directing symphony concerts.

May 10 1890 - A newly rebuilt Put-in-Bay House on South Bass Island reopens on the site of the previous hotel that was leveled by flames. 1902 - A mob of mourners converges on Forest Cemetery as six of seven of the young people who lost their lives in a boating tragedy on the Maumee River are laid to rest. The Toledo Bee reports as many as 2,000 morbid curiosity seekers packed the city graveyard and trampled the sacred ground, picked flowers and gathered other relics . The article stated they almost turned it into a circus atmosphere with laughing and disrespect. The Bee called the crowd disgusting .

From the Historian: The park on Main Street Anita Mance © ANITA MANCE Spring in Edmund Lyon Park. Edmund Lyon Park is an open expanse planned as a park for families in a planned community. It is 7 acres of land in the middle of our town/village, land donated by mechanical engineer/philanthropist Kate Gleason. When the village of Despatch (renamed East Rochester in 1906) was founded in 1897, it was created as a planned community for families and workers of the Despatch Transportation Company of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroads. Acres of farmland were purchased to create an industrial suburb. Part of the land was reserved for parks the first park being Vanderbilt Park in the middle of the village. The heavily forested, swampy area was purchased by Kate Gleason. Kate brought in workers from her father’s Rochester company, Gleason Works, to excavate and clear out the space.
