New York National Guard member dies in Washington, D C

(WBNG) The New York National Guard announced the death of a soldier on duty in Washington, D.C. 26-year-old Specialist Justin Grennell was pronounced dead in his hotel room by emergency services personnel on the morning of March 11, the National Guard says. They say his death is under investigation by the Washington D.C. Metro Police. Grennell was part of the state National Guard COVID-19 response team. He enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 2014 and in the Geneva-based A Troop as an anti-tank gunner. Grennell was assigned to the capital to provide security for the inauguration of President Joe Biden.

Official release from the Madison County Courier The New York National Guard regrets to announce that Specialist Justin Grennell, a New York Army National Guard soldier on duty in Washington D.C., was pronounced dead in his hotel room by emergency services personnel early March 11, 2021. Grennell, a 26-year-old Marcellus resident assigned to A Troop of the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry, was found unresponsive by his roommate. New York National Guard soldiers immediately called 911 and administered CPR until police and emergency services personnel arrived. His death is under investigation by the Washington, D.C., Metro Police. Grennell was one of 540 New York National Guard soldiers sent to Washington in January to provide security following the inauguration of President Joseph Biden. He enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 2014 and served as an anti-tank gunner in A Troop, which is based in Geneva. Oswego County natives promoted within New York Army National Guard

LATHAM — Maj. Gen. Ray Shields, the adjutant general for New York state, announced recently the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership. Nathanial Cleveland from Phoenix, and assigned to the 204th Engineer Platoon, received a promotion to the rank of private on Jan. 30. Jeremy Donohue from Oswego, and assigned to the Company C, 427th Brigade Support Battalion, received a promotion to the rank of staff sergeant on Jan. 29. Austin Hallett from Cato, and assigned to the 827th Engineer Company, received a promotion to the rank of private on Jan. 10.

Photo provided by New York Army National Guard Mendon resident Chief Warrant Officer Christian Koch was honored along with fellow soldiers, Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Prial and Chief Warrant Officer Steven Skoda at a memorial service last Friday (February 26) at the New York Army National Guard’s Aviation Support facility. The three New York Army National Guard soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash when their UH-60 medical helicopter went down on a routine training mission in a farm field on West Bloomfield Road on January 20. The service was not open to the public; it was for the soldiers’ families as well as soldiers of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation Regiment, New York Army National Guard commanders, selected first responders and other guests.
