70 Faces Media, the publisher of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, has acquired the New York Jewish Week brand.
In a deal completed late last month, the 45-year-old Jewish Week will join the growing stable of brands at 70 Faces Media, which also publishes Alma, Kveller, My Jewish Learning and JTA Hebrew. The Jewish Week will retain a focus on Jewish New York, while drawing on 70 Faces Media’s experience and resources as North America’s largest and most diverse Jewish media organization.
“We look forward to building on the esteemed history of the New York Jewish Week and developing a lasting and compelling digital identity that reaches new audiences and strengthens the lives of all Jewish New Yorkers.” said Ami Eden, CEO and executive editor of 70 Faces Media.
To say Andrew Silow-Carroll is excited would be an understatement. “I’m licking my chops,” he said on Monday afternoon after news broke that his previous employer, 70 Faces Media, would acquire the ailing New York Jewish Week, where he has been editor-in-chief since late 2019.
Silow-Carroll, who has worked in Jewish journalism for decades, took over a paper that was already in financial distress, only to see its fortunes plummet like those of so many other Jewish and local news outlets due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, he feels he has been thrown a lifeline.
The acquisition by 70 Faces Media, a New York-based nonprofit that operates several other Jewish news and information sites, was billed as an experiment in building sustainable local Jewish journalism. Its properties include the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), a wire service where Silow-Carroll previously served as editor (and of which the Forward is a client); Kveller, a resource for Jewish parents; Alma, a news
