New Mexico United coach Troy Lesesne hopes the offense, which got nothing done in its opener, gets it going Saturday at El Paso. (Jim Thompson/Journal)
New Mexico United will make it an even 20 – as in 20 consecutive matches outside its home state – Saturday night in El Paso.
Will 20 prove to be a lucky number?
United (0-1), which has a long-awaited home match looming next week, first hopes to bring some momentum into its return to Isotopes Park. It won’t come easily against rival El Paso Locomotive FC, and NMU coach Troy Lesesne knows it.

“El Paso’s a great team,” Lesesne said. “They’ve been to the Western Conference finals the last two years, and that’s where we want to be. We want to take a step forward. Matches like this one are important.”

Editor’s note: The Journal continues “What’s in a Name?,” a twice a month column in which staff writer Elaine Briseño will give a short history of how places in New Mexico got their names.
Enchant: to influence by or as if by charms and incantation, bewitch; to attract and move deeply; rouse to ecstatic admiration
These are definitions according to Merriam-Webster but the word has deeper meaning for New Mexicans.
For decades, the country’s 47th state has been known as the Land of Enchantment. It’s sometimes hard to explain the allure of New Mexico to new arrivals and those who have never been here, but alluring it is, despite often finding itself on the bottom of one list or another.
The pandemic has left many bruised mentally and emotionally.
Even if someone didn’t lose a job, or worse, a loved one, the stress of being locked down for more than a year has probably taken its toll.
With the availability of the vaccine, people are slowly starting to move around and continue their pre-COVID-19 activities, including dining out, attending family gatherings, going to church services in person and taking in live music.

But as people emerge from their cocoons, they might find things don’t feel exactly as they did before after a year of following different social norms and rules.
