New Bedford teachers hope COVID vaccine eligibility speeds up return to classroom

Starting March 11, kindergarten through grade 12 educators, child care workers and school staff will be eligible to schedule COVID-19 vaccine appointments, according to a press release from the Baker-Polito administration. Originally planned for April, the state is pushing educators and staff to the front of the line for vaccines in an effort to safely return all elementary students back to in-person learning in the coming weeks. Local response has been generally positive from educators across the SouthCoast. With districts beginning to send elementary students back to a full in-person learning model, teachers and administration have been concerned about teachers not yet eligible for the vaccine.

Mar 6, 2021 Emma Zhou of Tabor Academy’s “Connections or Lack Thereof” will be featured by the MAC MARION The Marion Art Center will be opening a new exhibit, the High School Art Show, with a virtual reception on March 12. Student artists featured in the gallery come from Old Rochester Regional High School, New Bedford High, Tabor Academy, and ORR Junior High. The exhibit features works by nearly thirty young artists.  The MAC is also working with Tri-Town Against Racism to showcase entries to the anti-racist organization’s recent creative expression contest held during Black History Month, based on the theme “Beyond Martin and Rosa”. 

Innovative app to provide in-home beauty service in SouthCoast

NEW BEDFORD A new app designed to provide in-home beauty services, will be available starting March 15. New Bedford’s Brandan J. Burke and Devaughn Senna, alongside Nashville, N.H.’s Grantham D. Bethea, are ready to interrupt the beauty styling business with their innovative idea. “We get to show the world how three young Black men come together and really create something beautiful,” Bethea, 24, said about their new app, SRVHUB. “We want to inspire impact on the world, show the world what we can do.” The idea for the app was born in a dorm room at the University of Hartford in November 2019. Burke, 23, who was cutting hair for friends, wanted to launch his own barbershop franchise but realized it was an already oversaturated market.
