Coming off an Olympic-best time in their semifinal, Carrington and Regal were clear victors in a time of 1:35.785, ahead of Poland and Hungary. The previous world’s best time was 1:37.071 set by an Austrian duo in 2011. That was despite it being Carrington s fourth race of the day at the Sea Forest Waterway in just more than three hours. It was Regal s first Olympic medal – the 29-year-old made her Olympic debut in 2016 when part of the NZ crew which finished fifth in the K4 500. Regal will be one of Carrington s biggest rivals in the K1 500 event, which starts on Wednesday.
