Two members of long-running New Zealand band Olmecha Supreme Soundsystem - Captain Imon Starr and King Home Boy - will play a special New Zealand Music Month show in Whanganui. It s the first time the group has performed here.
Starr, formerly a part of Wellington roots act Rhombus, said while the full band wouldn t be making the journey, he and King Home Boy would still be having as much fun as the audience themselves.
Up until March, when Covid-19 lockdowns began being enforced, things had been going well. Shilling opened Totara Street when he saw a space formerly occupied by a metalwork company and realised it resembled a small version of long-running Auckland venue The Powerstation. “It was a tin shed, but it had the basic bones sitting there,” he says. “There was an opening – there was nowhere (for bands coming to Tauranga) to play. The stars just aligned and we jumped in.” He and Munro fixed it up, put in a sound system and crammed in 400 people for sold out shows by L.A.B., Tiki Taane and Hollie Smith.

Desian Robb has been announced as the winner of the 2021 Te Manu Tito Waiata Song Writing Competition for his instantly memorable song which features a hooky melody .
In the lead-up to New Zealand Music Month (May 2021) locals had the opportunity to enter Te Manu Tito Waiata Song Writing Competition.
The competition is designed to recognise and showcase some of the talented people in the Rotorua community who are creating original songs.
It s New Zealand Music Month; the concept still seems a bit strange to me.
I get the idea of course. Lest New Zealand music be lost in the glut of overseas sounds let s set aside a particular month to just focus on the local. Something like Maori Language Week.
In reaction people often point out that every month (or week) should be those things. Fair enough too. But I guess if NZ Music Month means that record labels here are going to push their local signings a bit more then there s nothing wrong with it.
As to whether acts not on record labels (i.e. ninety eight per cent of New Zealand bands) releasing music in New Zealand Music Month is a good idea, I d probably say no. The increased advertising from record labels tends to eclipse smaller releases so, ironically, independent bands are probably be best avoiding NZMM.
