BOSTON A federal judge on Tuesday set conditions for the pretrial release of Joshua Fernandes, the former New Bedford police sergeant and treasurer of the police union being charged with wire fraud for allegedly embezzling nearly $50,000 in union funds from 2016 through 2019.
During his initial appearance in court, which was conducted via Zoom, Magistrate Judge Jennifer C. Boal made Fernandes, 42, aware of his rights and the conditions of his release. He is not allowed to posses any firearms or dangerous weapons and he must continue to participate in a mental health treatment program and report to probation services as directed.
He must also avoid contacting any persons who may be victims or potential witnesses related to the charges and investigation.
