Place North West | Manchester science museum unveils £5m exhibition space

Dan Whelan The 8,000 sq ft gallery is located on the lower ground floor of the Science and Industry Museum’s grade two-listed New Warehouse.  Funded largely by a £3.8m grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the £5m project is the first element of long-term strategy by the museum – known as Mosi – to restore its historic estate.  Designed by architectural practice Carmody Groarke, work to create the Special Exhibitions Gallery was carried out by contractor HH Smith & Sons.  Mosi director Sally MacDonald said: “This year has brought home to all of us how fundamentally science shapes our lives. As we all rebuild personally, socially and culturally, and look forward to better things in 2021, we can’t wait to share this new exhibition space.”

The new gallery at the Science and Industry Museum, in the basement of a 19th-century warehouse, will be used for special exhibitions London-based architecture practice Carmody Groarke has completed a new Special Exhibitions Gallery for the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester. Located on the lower ground floor of a Grade II-listed warehouse dating to the 1880s, the 725 sq m flexible gallery is the first project to be completed as part of the museum’s long-term restoration and renovation programme.  The Science and Industry Museum is located on the site of the historic Liverpool Road Station, and comprises a series of built structures including the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station, the world’s first railway goods warehouse and a shipping shed known as the Power Hall.
