First impressions are everything. And on his media blitz, Justin Fields left a good one.
I’ve pulled some interesting thoughts and highlights from Fields’ post-Draft media tour. I have also added some commentary for context, perspective, depth, and analysis. Enjoy!
What Kind of Player is Fields?
Naturally, the first thing on everyone’s mind is to ask what kind of player the Bears are getting. Rather than do it myself, here’s Fields on his own behalf:
“The kind of player the Bears are getting is a versatile player, a player that can make plays both with my arm and also with my legs and, of course, a smart player; a player that’s going to make smart decisions and a player that wants to win, that’s willing to do whatever to win.”

ROUND 1
No. 11 (from New York Giants): Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
Adam Jahns’ analysis: The Bears were bold and aggressive again, and they had to be when it came to quarterback. GM Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy traded up from No. 20 to No. 11 to select Fields. He’s the organization’s next big swing at getting the most important position in sports right. He follows the Bears’ swing and miss on Mitch Trubisky, but Nagy should provide Fields with time to learn behind veteran quarterbacks Andy Dalton and Nick Foles.
Bill Landis on what the Bears are getting: A calm, confident and polished pocket passer with the athleticism to be a devastating runner in the open field, Fields would likely have totally rewritten the quarterback records at Ohio State with the benefit of two full seasons. Even without that, Fields is arguably the best to ever play the position in Columbus.
Every pick in the NFL Draft has a trickle-down effect and ramifications on the selection that comes after it.
And in the case of the Bears’ trade up with the Giants and selection of quarterback Justin Fields, their movement had a wide-ranging impact on a division rival.
“It’s good they did,” PFT’s Mike Florio said of the Bears’ pick of Fields. “Because, you know what, the Vikings may have been thinking of taking Fields at No. 14 if someone hadn’t jumped up to get him.”
What Florio heard on Thursday night has since been added upon elsewhere:
Bears weren t the only team interested in trading up to 11. Source says Vikings also made an offer, but they obviously weren t offering a 2022 first to move up three spots. Easy call for the Giants to accept the huge haul from the Bears. Competition may have driven up price.
