He held a bachelor s degree in business from Jacksonville, Ala., State University, a master s of divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and a master s in education from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss. A member of First Baptist Church of Cleveland, he was employed by Whirlpool Corp., at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his father, George Gary Lawson.

Greear have joined a growing chorus of dissent over a statement from the denomination’s Council of Seminary Presidents denouncing racism and critical race theory. , which argues that “the actions of some in the SBC appear to be more concerned with political maneuvering than working to present a vibrant, gospel-loving, racially and culturally diverse vision.”
