Letter: Mismanagement of forests will lead to disaster

After reading the recent East Oregonian article about wildfires making an early entrance in our region, I felt compelled to share my opinion.

The statement about local fire officials being already concerned about the fire conditions prompted my response to share another perspective. They might consider the old saying, An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The millions of dollars that our Forest Service leaders are paid to help prevent and fight forest fires seems at times to be a gravy train, and politically motivated.

It seems the laws that are made as to what and how fires can be fought on public property are like tying one hand behind the firefighters, because they just might break a rule putting the fire out too soon.

You may have been saying his name wrong your entire life. Don t feel bad, we were too. Old Smokey shared a tweet this week, recognizing the completion of the world s largest Smokey Bear statue, located in Hill City, South Dakota. News station WBNS 10TV shared this Youtube video of the massive, 30 x 25 foot wooden statue, and it looks pretty awesome. Get our free mobile app

Dry weather means increased fire dangers

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... The Santa Fe National Forest is reminding those enjoying the outdoors to make sure to properly extinguish any campfires. The 2021 wildfire season is approaching and the SFNF is experiencing severe drought conditions and high fire danger. Over Mother’s Day weekend, fire prevention patrols in the Jemez Ranger District found 18 abandoned campfires. The Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District found an estimated 10 abandoned campfires reported over the last 10 days. Most of the abandoned campfires – the leading human cause of wildfire – were found at dispersed campsites. The Jemez patrols are also reporting several of the campfires found were not still-smoldering ash, but actually flaming, burning logs which no one had even attempted to extinguish.
