6 DeKalb retailers fail tobacco compliance checks

Northern Star DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department found six local establishments operating in violation of the law by selling tobacco to minors, according to an April 5 DeKalb Police Department news release. The six establishments not in compliance include Northern Fresh Market, 1013 W. Hillcrest Drive, Quick Stop, 910 Pappas Drive, Dekalb Food Mart, 850 Pappas Drive, The Smoke Shop, 818 W. Lincoln Highway, Jewel-Osco, 1320 Sycamore Road, and Ash Petroleum, 2400 Sycamore Road. The police department issued ordinance violations for the “Sale of Tobacco to a Minor” for each establishment, according to the news release. A total of 36 establishments were inspected throughout the city. The compliance checks performed March 6 are used to determine if local tobacco retailers are complying with local minimum-age tobacco laws which prohibit the sale of tobacco to minors. An Apache Junction officer was hospitalized Tuesday after being shot, police said.  The officer was shot just before 4 p.m. near Crismon Road and Apache Trail near Mesa, Apache Junction Police Department spokesperson Marshall Harshman said. Police found a black, stolen truck at a Bank of America in Apache Junction earlier in the week. The vehicle fled the scene and officers followed, but said they stopped the pursuit “out of concern for the safety of the public, Harshman said.
