As pandemic lockdowns went into effect in March 2020 and millions of Americans began working from home rather than commuting to offices, heavy traffic in America s most congested urban centers like Boston suddenly ceased to exist. Soon afterwards, the air was noticeably cleaner. But that wasn t the only effect. A team of Boston University biologists who study how human-related sounds impact natural environments seized the opportunity to learn how the reduced movement of people would impact local ecosystems. They found surprisingly that sound levels increased in some nature conservation areas, a result of cars driving faster on roads no longer choked by traffic.
Scientists Have Underestimated the Impact of Fires on Earth’s Northern Forests
Written by AZoCleantechApr 30 2021
New research indicates that the computer-based models currently used to simulate how Earth s climate will change in the future underestimate the impact that forest fires and drying climate are having on the world s northernmost forests, which make up the largest forest biome on the planet. It s an important understanding because these northern forests absorb a significant amount of Earth s carbon dioxide.
The finding, reached by studying 30 years of the world s forests using NASA satellite imaging data, suggests that forests won t be able to sequester as much carbon as previously expected, making efforts to reduce carbon emissions all the more urgent.
Northern Forest Fires Could Accelerate Climate Change
The study focused on wooded peatland and forests like the landscape pictured here near the town of Wrigley in Canada’s Northwest Territories. This drone imagery was taken by then-BU PhD candidate Jonathan Wang during June 2017.

A Physics Breakthrough: More Evidence of New Particles or Forces
This donut-shaped ring is a racetrack for particles called muons. It operates at negative 450 degrees Fahrenheit, and physicists use the machine to study muons as they travel through a magnetic field. New results from a massive experiment double down on indicating undiscovered influences on particles called muons

There are still-undiscovered particles or unknown forces swirling all around us, suggest new results from a massive experiment conducted at the US Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Illinois. The findings were analyzed with the help of more than 200 scientists from 35 institutions in seven countries, including physicists from Boston University.
