Authorities in the northeastern region of Friuli Venezia Giulia have expressed concern for the high number of unaccompanied foreign minors reaching Italy from the Balkan route through the northeastern border.
The prosecutor general of the appeals court in the northeastern Italian city of Trieste, Dario Grohmann, expressed concern for the high number of unaccompanied minors reaching Italy through the Balkan route during a ceremony on January 30 for the inauguration of the Italian judicial year. It is a constant source of concern, the high number of unaccompanied foreign minors, as well as the migrant flow coming from the so-called Balkan route. This is not only a humanitarian emergency but also one of the most relevant problems for the state administrations involved, said Grohmann.

The Court of Rome ruled that the readmission procedure enacted at the eastern Italian border based on an accord between Italy and Slovenia in 1996 is illegitimate. Judges upheld an appeal brought by a Pakistani asylum seeker who arrived in Trieste and was readmitted in July to Slovenia, then to Croatia and then to Bosnia.
Readmissions of migrants from Italy to Slovenia are illegitimate, ruled the Court of Rome in an ordinance on January 18 when it upheld an urgent appeal brought by a Pakistani asylum seeker.
The man had arrived in Trieste and was readmitted in July 2020 to Slovenia, from there to Croatia, and further on to Bosnia. Judges said the man has the right to immediately enter Italy to apply for asylum.

Police on the border between northern Italy and Slovenia will start using cameras that automatically detect movement to monitor irregular crossings. Most of those crossing the border are from Pakistan and Afghanistan, police say.
Authorities in the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which borders Slovenia, this week approved changes making it easier for police to detect irregular migration in the area. Once again the regional administration has shown it is attentive to the demands of our local and border police, working in controlling the borders to fight immigration along the Balkan route, said Pierpaolo Roberti, regional councillor for security and migration policy.
