2021 OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature: T&T writers dominate longlist
Writers with roots in five different Caribbean territories have been longlisted for the 2021 OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature, sponsored by One Caribbean Media, owner of the Express newspapers, TV6, and the OCM radio network.
The 2021 NGC Bocas Lit Fest which runs from Friday 23 – Sunday 25 April will take place online.
The OCM Bocas prize, now in its eleventh year, is internationally considered the leading literary award for Caribbean writers. The Prize recognises books in three genre categories poetry, fiction, and literary non-fiction published by authors of Caribbean birth or citizenship in the preceding year. Of the nine books longlisted for the 2021 Prize, five are by writers born in Trinidad and Tobago, with the other longlisted authors representing Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, and St. Lucia.

The publisher of the winning book in the Costa Book Awards extolled the benefits of printing in the UK on Radio 4’s You & Yours programme last week, including a shout-out for long-term supplier Imprint Digital.

Mermaid of Black Conch, by Monique Roffey, won the Costa Novel award and then carried off the overall Book of the Year. It is published by Leeds-based independent publisher Peepal Tree Press, which specialises in Caribbean and black British fiction, poetry and non-fiction.

On the heels of launching the 2021 season of the Wadadli Pen Challenge with a March 26 submission deadline, the organisers have announced several additional and very meaningful patronages.
According to a release, Cedric Holder, father of Zuri Holder, who died tragically in a road accident in January, has requested inclusion of a plaque to honour his memory.
The Cushion Club Zuri Holder Achievement Award, inclusive of a gift certificate toward the purchase of books, will be awarded to a writer 12 years or younger.
Morris, Baugh win Bocas Henry Swanzy Award

THE 2021 recipients of the Bocas Henry Swanzy Award are Jamaicans Edward Baugh and Mervyn Morris – both professors emeriti of the University of the West Indies.
Baugh and Morris are widely considered pioneers of the study of West Indian literature, over careers that each span half a century. They are to be honoured by the Bocas Lit Fest with the annual Bocas Henry Swanzy Award for Distinguished Service to Caribbean Letters, a media release said.
The award, established in 2013, is named for the late BBC radio producer Henry Swanzy. Irish by birth, Swanzy worked as producer of the influential Caribbean Voices radio programme – originally founded by Jamaican Una Marson – from 1946-1954, becoming an essential figure in the development of modern West Indian literature.
