Civic Groups Donations Keep Lamar Sitting Pretty : The Prowers Journal

  Members of two local sororities, Laureate Rho and Beta Sigma Phi recently provided funding for two benches which have been set up at the two main playgrounds in Willow Creek Park.  These are gifts that will keep on giving, season in and season out. Turpin, Anderson and Guihen at East Playground Bench Site Both benches are in close proximity to the playground equipment on the west and east sides of the park, providing some relief for the legs and backs of parents and grandparents who accompany their children to the park and want a nearby place where they can sit, watch and enjoy the youthful antics of their offspring.

Obituary: Frances LaVerne Crooks (5/6/21) | Nevada Daily Mail

Thursday, May 6, 2021 Frances LaVerne Crooks, 79, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Monday, May 3, 2021, at her home in Nevada. LaVerne was born Jan. 31, 1942, in Walker, Mo., to Albert Wayne and Emma Fern (Tuttle) Phillips. She was united in marriage to Gene Bobbett on June 25, 1961, and he preceded her in death on May 26, 1999. LaVerne later married Dodson “Sonny” Crooks on June 15, 2003, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 2020. LaVerne was raised in Walker and graduated from Walker High School Class of 1960. One week after graduating from high school she began working at Farm and Home Savings in Nevada. Following 48 years in banking, LaVerne retired from Team Bank as Assistant Vice President on November 28, 2008. She has worked part-time in the office at Ferry Funeral Home for the past 20 years. Her memberships included being a 60-year member of Nevada Chapter No. 53 OES, a 50 plus year member of Beta Sigma Phi, former member of Soroptimist International of Nevada, Royal Neig

Crossett Chamber Names Award Winners

Members of the Crossett Area Chamber of Commerce gathered Tuesday, April 27 for the Chamber’s 69th annual awards banquet. The award ceremonies ended with an emotional tribute from outgoing Chamber President Howard Beaty Jr. to former Mayor Marshall Scott McCormick, who was posthumously named Man of the Year. The honor was bestowed on the late mayor one year and 11 days after his death while still in office.  McCormick was in his 42nd year of service to the people of Crossett. He’d worked as a police officer, investigator and captain for the Crossett Police Department from 1978 to 1998, at which time he was elected mayor. He was re-elected to five additional consecutive terms.
