Memorial Day observance returns to VFW Post 764 in Peters Township

During his 32 years as a Peters Township resident, Dr. Walter Schrantz has attended many local Memorial Day observances at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 764. “I don’t recall the last time a healthcare provider has presented this address,” he said Monday while serving as the event’s keynote speaker. An orthodontist whose practice is within walking distance of Post 764, Schrantz spoke as a U.S. Navy Reserves commander who, among other medically oriented duties, was mobilized last year in support of what he called the war against COVID-19. One hundred years ago, a Peters Township High School student named Elizabeth Douglass decided to compile what she called a “Character Book.” A page from Margaret Douglass Character Book from 1921 reveals a classmate s stated food preference, among other tidbits. Harry Funk “She went around to all of her classmates and would ask your name, address, what’s your favorite song? What’s your favorite food? What do you want to be when you grow up?” archivist Carolyn Friedrich said. Today, the handwritten journal is available for viewing at Peters Township Public Library, where Friedrich is working with reference librarian Margaret Deitzer to preserve as much local history as possible for posterity.
