Three-year-old boy Axle was found alive and well more than 3.5kms from home, nearly 22 hours after he went missing. His dad tells RNZ s Checkpoint how the support of their new community helped get them through the cold night.

The toddler wandered off from his Mangatuna home near Tolaga bay at about 1pm on Tuesday, wearing his shark gumboots, a nappy and a T-shirt. Overnight temperatures in the area were around 7C.

He had been checked over at Gisborne Hospital and apart from a couple of scratches and bruises, a sore throat and runny nose, he was found to be well. Allatt said she was surprised he didn t have hypothermia. The temperature in the area had dipped to 7 degrees Celsiuson Tuesday night. Axle had been playing with a little white dog called Bro on the property before he disappeared.

Axle s mum Haley Allatt and dad Glenn are reunited with their little boy. The family searched the farm and then, after they found no sign of him, called the police.
