Auto, Inc. employees who have been protesting the lack of a labor contract since October. Karen DeRoche and Julie Dunstan, whose husbands are miners and were on strike against Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. for four months last fall, also showed for an early morning rally in Negaunee and the mass picketing that followed. In all, about 65 labor unionists gathered at E.H. Ronn Union Hall in Negaunee, then picked up picket signs to carry to the rally. The Saturday pickets and the rally urged shoppers to boycott the O.K. Auto stores in Ishpeming and Marquette. “In the case of O.K. Auto, we need to take the strength we have in the union, and help to get good contracts,” said Dave Foster, District 33 representative for the U

The host Patriots finished with 80.5 points, followed by Negaunee, 71.5; and Ishpeming, 26. Brian Honkala was a double-event winner for the Patriots taking the shot put with a throw of 47-feet, 1-inch, and the discus (131.5). Other individual winners for Westwood included Bob Nelson in the 10-meter dash (12:02); Rich Conrad in the 800 dash (2:15:19); Clay Koski in the 1600 run (4:59:96); and Mike Gelmi in the long jump (17′-10″).

Apr 30, 2021 EDITOR’S NOTE: Superiorland Yesterdays is prepared by the reference staff at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. 30 years ago IRON MOUNTAIN Some Dickinson County prisoners will be put to work as part of their sentence in a program organized by Sheriff Donald Charlevoix. The Community Work Program began recently when a team of inmates under the direction of on-site supervisor Deputy Dan Maki began clean-up work in Dickinson County parks, Charlevoix said. Teams will continue to work through November, cleaning parks, picking up litter from the sides of roads and doing other projects for which manpower is at a premium due to state funding cuts. Charlevoix said the work program serves several needs. “It eliminates taking up valuable jail space for short-timers who are sentenced. It leaves the jail space for people who really need to be incarcerated,” Charlevoix said. “We’re generally at, or near, our capacity. It’s also a hell of a deterrent,” the
