For the cost of two hip replacements, the Canterbury health board has paid an Auckland-based contractor to help it find “significant savings” in its budget. Alma Consulting was paid about $55,000 for up to 110 hours of work – or $500 an hour – to “narrow the focus” and “assist us to ensure we can identify significant savings”, Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) chief executive Peter Bramley said. He told the board about the consultancy appointment in March after starting in his role in February and said he did not have the luxury of waiting for the new executive team to be in place to work on the plan.
In her decision released on Friday, Judge Christina Inglis said Humphrey had a clearly arguable case for permanent reinstatement and that the potential impact on his colleagues by interim reinstatement could be managed. She said the CDHB’s case was hurt by evidence the employment relationship was not irreparable when Humphrey was sacked. Humphrey told
Stuff on Friday he was very pleased with the decision but had been advised to say no more. “The decision speaks for itself,” he said. The CDHB declined to comment.

Humphrey, left, was difficult to manage, according to the CDHB. CDHB submissions filed for last week’s reinstatement hearing alleged Humphrey had a longstanding tendency of being hostile and confrontational, especially with senior colleagues in his public health team.

Canterbury’s health boss says building a workforce, managing bookings and maintaining “business as usual” health services are the biggest challenges in the region’s Covid-19 vaccination plan. At this week’s Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) meeting, chief executive Peter Bramley said he was confident the board would be able to increase Covid-19 vaccinations by 200 per cent – from about 3500 to 35,000 doses per week – by the end of June.
