“AN affray of a serious aspect took place at 10pm on Sunday at a lonely place known as Four Lane Ends between Durham and Flass Hall,” reported the D&S on January 14, 1871. The scene of the affray was a newly-built pub, called the Flass Inn, which we think still stands but is now in the middle of Ushaw Moor. The landlord, William Dawson, was in the Flass with his friend, Robert Dixon Marshall, a well known rower who was also the landlord of the Griffin Inn in Durham Market Place. Drinking in the Flass were some Ushaw Moor miners, including John, Tim and Peter Connolly, who had a grudge against Mr Marshall.

A tribute to the Oliver fishermen of Galway’s Claddagh and all those who have lost lives at sea is reflected in a moving short film spearheaded by arts consultant Brendan Savage.
Entitled
Sea of Souls, the film captures images of 600 floating candles on the Claddagh basin, set to the music of The Galway Baytones male voice a capella group singing the 18th-century Scottish song The Parting Glass.
The film is intended to remember the Olivers and all sea fatalities, and to highlight the role of the Galway RNLI inshore lifeboat and Water Safety Ireland.

De Lima asks Court to junk second drug case, cites lack of evidence vs her
A day after seeking to dismiss one of the three trumped-up drug cases against her, Opposition Senator Leila M. de Lima has asked the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 205 to junk her second drug case citing failure of the Prosecution to present sufficient competent evidence against her.
De Lima, through her lawyers, filed a Demurrer to Evidence for Criminal Case 17-165 last Jan. 8 where she is facing a conspiracy to commit illegal drug trading with her former aide and co-accused Ronnie Dayan.
