PORTSMOUTH Department of Public Works Director Peter Rice acknowledged dealing with the placement of the crosswalk at the realigned Bartlett and Cate street intersection remains a challenge.
“Overall the intersection is working really well. There is one section that is an area of concern, that’s been an area of concern throughout the project, it’s really the concept of the crosswalk,” Rice said during Monday’s City Council meeting.
The intersection was realigned in mid-July, and the work included adding a crosswalk on Bartlett Street where there wasn’t one before.
But some residents and city officials, including Mayor Rick Becksted, have questioned the safety of the crosswalk, contending it’s too close to the intersection of Bartlett and Islington streets, and motorists often speed through the area.
